First-Year Students Find Inspiration in Fulton Sheen at Convocation

First-year convocation was a joyous occasion marking the beginning of the Class of 2030’s academic journey. The legacy of the renowned Archbishop Fulton J. Sheen, an alumnus and former professor, loomed large over the ceremony that was held days before his beatification. 

Sheen’s intellectual formation at The Catholic University of America prepared him to impact the lives of millions of people, Vice Dean of the College of Arts and Sciences Seth Smith explained during his keynote address. 

Catholic University first-year students can literally walk in his footsteps on campus. Smith encouraged students to follow Sheen’s example to speak “confidently, clearly and compassionately.” This is no easy task, he explained. 

The campus culture shapes minds and hearts to make an impact. Each moment, he said, can be an opportunity to make a difference. 

“Start small,” said Smith. “Be willing to have an awkward conversation. Share your ideas with humility.” 

After Smith’s address, each of the first-year students received a charm of Fulton Sheen and other saints to serve as reminders of their higher calling.  

Vice Provost for Teaching and Dean of Undergraduate Studies Jennifer Paxton said: “A Catholic University education is not just about acquiring knowledge and skills but also the virtues to flourish in all aspects of your life.”
