“Catholic University’s love for Archbishop Sheen mirrors the love that he had for Catholic University,” said Father Guilbeau. “On campus, we have reminders of him everywhere. Courses are still taught in the classroom that he used. Masses are still offered in the chapel where he prayed. In fact, I offered Mass there for the students just this morning.”
Archbishop Sheen’s Catholic University education shaped him to become one of the nation’s most recognized and revered evangelists. At Catholic University, Father Guilbeau explained, “Sheen the student became Sheen the teacher.”
Father Guilbeau said Sheen has been an inspiration to him since the very first days of his call to the priesthood. He sees the education at Catholic University as exemplifying Sheen’s views on the purpose of a true education: acquainting the mind with truth, the correlation of studies, and deepening the mystery.
“Archbishop Sheen’s long connection to Catholic University underscores the great value that he put in education,” said Father Guilbeau. “Catholic University cherishes this opportunity to thank God for our association with Archbishop Sheen in this place on this night at this holy hour.”
Several other alumni are on the pathway to beatification including Sister Thea Bowman, Father Emil Kapaun, and Terence Cardinal Cooke.
“We at Catholic University are blessed to serve Christ and his Church in this unique way,” said Father Guilbeau, referring to the University’s distinctive formation in service to the nation, Church, and world.
