Dear Campus community,
Yesterday, Nov. 7, was the National Day for the Victims of Communism, a memorial launched by the Victims of Communism Memorial Foundation to commemorate the victims of Communist regimes. The date points back to November 7, 1917, the day the Bolshevik political party seized control of the Russian capital. That event set the stage for the Bolshevik Revolution and the founding of the Soviet Union.
I am sending to all of you a statement signed by the presidents of D.C. College Democrats, Catholic University Democrats, Catholic University Republicans, and D.C. College Republicans in support of the victims of Communism. Also signing the statement is the Neighborhood Commissioner for District 5A-4, Catholic University student Diego Rojas, who represents the University, the Basilica, and Capuchin College.
I welcome the spirit of collaboration demonstrated by these student groups, who are divided on other issues, to find common ground. It is my pleasure to share this statement with the campus community.

As I write this letter, the Catholic Church is once again under attack by communist regimes across Latin America; particularly under the rule of Daniel Ortega in Nicaragua. As the son of Cuban immigrants who fled the scourge of communism, I know all too well the evil that communism has inflicted on the world. Cubans, Nicaraguans, and Venezuelans are in the grips of this dangerous ideology that continuously violates human rights, and oppresses all those who live under those communist regimes.
We at the Catholic University of America have a moral obligation to become the first university to stand united and firm against the godless and evil philosophy of communism and join in the national effort observing November 7th as Victims of Communism Day.
Our top political leaders from our campus on both sides of the political aisle have come together in an alliance to make this possible.
