Legacy of Fulton Sheen: Power of Preaching at Catholic University

As Archbishop Fulton Sheen’s beatification approaches this September, the priest whose radio and television ministry once reached millions of Americans is shaping a new generation of preachers – right here at The Catholic University of America. 

This July, clergy from various dioceses, gathered for a summer institute as part of an initiative in Sheen’s name. This institute, part of Archbishop J. Fulton Sheen Excellence in Preaching Initiative, is one of the key elements that was funded by a five-year Lilly grant, with programming led by Susan Timoney (associate professor of practice in pastoral studies, School of Theology and Religious Studies). This summer, we welcomed the second cohort, with participants from 16 dioceses, 12 states, and two countries. 

A University alumnus and beloved professor of theology and philosophy for nearly 25 years, Fulton Sheen, perhaps one of the most influential American Catholics of the 20th century, remains the guiding spirit and inspiration behind this week-long workshop and program elements. 

The main purpose of the Sheen Initiative is to assist priests with enhanced training in homiletics and how to address contemporary issues in their sermons. It also provides communication skills training and ongoing formation, “recognizing preaching’s vital role in evangelization, catechesis, and the sacramental life of the Church.” Key offerings include this annual preaching workshop/summer institute. a mentor program, and a diaconal preaching initiative. There is also a lay preaching certificate program and several resource guides for participants.
